Semi-final 2 (10.05.18.)
1: Alexander Rybak - That's How You Write a Song (Norway)
Nice funky beat going on! The song is a lot cuter than the title might have you assume, even if melodically it's not The Best or nuthin'.
2: The Humans - Goodbye (Romania)
Interesting band name. Are they implying everyone else is actually several dogs standing on top of each other in suits or something? :P Anyway... not quite sure what to make of the song on first listen. Feels like they took a song that ought to have been maybe twice as long and chopped it in half for the Eurovision. Hm.
3: Sanja Ilić & Balkanika - Nova deca (Serbia)
It's in Serbian!! I like the elderly flute rock wizard man. ... Song's kind of underwhelming, though.
4: Jessika feat. Jenifer Brening - Who We Are (San Marino)
Oh, so there IS a female singer in San Marino who isn't Valentina Monetta! :P ... Why are there robots on boxes? o.O ... Boring-arse chorus. Shame. Not even the rap can save it
5: Rasmussen - Higher Ground (Denmark)
Ooooooooh I think I liiiiiike it! Gothic Viking seafarers bringing the atmosphere!
6: Julia Samoylova - I Won't Break (Russia)
Julia Samoylova is back (this time actually allowed to participate in the Contest) with another boring song. Okay. Next
7: DoReDoS - My Lucky Day (Moldova)
OOH! What a strong beginning!! Got me dancing right away! OH YES. OH YES, IT'S GOOD. :D What a fun song! THANK YOU, MOLDOVA!!
8: Waylon - Outlaw in 'Em (Netherlands)
Oh, niiiice! Not a winner, but good to have a decent rock track. Sort of amused that he sounds southern American despite apparently being Dutch, though, LOL
9: Jessica Mauboy - We Got Love (Australia)
And our friends from halfway across the planet, nowhere near Europe, are back with... another pleasant but not particularly notable song. I guess after their first two very strong entries, they had to tone it down because they were too much at risk of winning? :P
10: Iriao - For You (Georgia)
'Ethno-Jazz Band', eh? Now that sounds interesting! And it's in Georgian!! Nice harmonising. Nice falsetto. Interesting song that will clearly require more listens.
11: Gromee feat. Lukas Meijer - Light Me Up (Poland)
Okay, nice, this one has some life to it! This one might grow on me. Will probably prove catchy, haha.
12: Christabelle - Taboo (Malta)
Hmm. Starts off promising, but then just... does little. Oh well
13: AWS - Viszlát nyár (Hungary)
It's in Hungarian!! Ooh, it's pretty good! Oooooh, death growling in the motherfucking Eurovision?! NIIIIICE. AND A KEY CHANGE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
14: Laura Rizzotto - Funny Girl (Latvia)
OMG this is really pretty?? Liking this a LOT on first listen, wow. Definitely one of the strongest entries this year.
15: Benjamin Ingrosso - Dance You Off (Sweden)
Ohhhh funkyyyyy! I'm dancing!! Sweeeedennnnnn, you doin goooooooooood. Like this a lot!Would've been even better with a key change at the end but
16: Vanja Radovanović - Inje (Montenegro)
It's in Montenegrin!! Liiiiking the dramatic modern-traditional sound. Ohhhhh yeeeeesssss Montenegro this is niiiiiiiiice. OMG IS THAT A KEY CHANGE?! :D Wonderful, Montenegro! Marvellous!!
17: Lea Sirk - Hvala, ne! (Slovenia)
It's in Slovene!! And ooh, nice strong beginning. That beat is mmmmmm. OH YES. OHHHH YES. LIKING THIS. OHHHH YES. :D
18: Mélovin - Under the Ladder (Ukraine)
Hello Ukrainian vampire-looking man. He has a nice voice, but the chorus... srsly what a letdown. Booooring
This one has been quite a mixed bag - some of the naffest of this year, but some extremely strong entries too. Faves in this semi-final are Latvia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Sweden, and Moldova, with honourable mentions to Georgia and Hungary.
