Versailles - Aristocrat's Symphony
Here we have a bit of symphonic power metal, performed by five gorgeous Japanese men in beautiful historically-inspired clothing. What's not to love? From their debut album 'Noble'. (RIP Jasmine You.)
Deine Lakaien - Forest
Ah, Deine Lakaien. When I first decided to check out this band, it was some of their later music that I listened to, and I found myself unimpressed and walked away. Later on, though, I ended up listening to their first, self-titled, album on a whim, and I fell in love with it. Then I fell in love with their second album, 'Dark Star', and after that I received the wonderful 'Forest Enter Exit' for Christmas, which includes this song.
Neosupervital - Rachel
This is another of my 120 Minutes discoveries: some Irish guy called Tim who makes fun, sometimes dorky electronic pop music! I was lucky enough to find his self-titled album (of which this song is track number 2) going for cheap on Amazon.co.uk ages ago, but sadly it seems to only be available through downloads now. (I like buying CDs, myself.)
John Frusciante - Going Inside
'To Record Only Water for Ten Days' by John Frusciante, who is best known as the former guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, is one of those albums that I consider to be essential summertime listening. ... Yes, I know it's October, but now you know you ought to check this album out for next summer! This song is the first track on the album.
KaS Product - Never Come Back
KaS Product was a coldwave band formed in France in the 80s, and they made lots of catchy stuff like this. As of writing, Last.fm tells me this is my 11th most played song since I started scrobbling in 2006, and indeed I appear to be rather addicted to it. From their 1981 album 'Try Out'.
Muse - Bliss
This was the first song I ever heard by Muse, back when I first started watching the Kerrang! channel. I must have been about, what, 14 at the time? Ahh, memories. Well, I still love this song to death, and 'Origin of Symmetry' is now one of my favourite albums of all time.
Cocteau Twins - Aloysius
I love this band. Oh goodness, they are amazing. And this song comes from another of my favourite albums of all time, 'Treasure'.
The Residents - Hello Skinny
This is the song that got me into The Residents, a mysterious avant-garde art collective known for their eyeball helmets, tuxedos and top hats. Probably one of their least strange songs, 'Hello Skinny' is the penultimate track on the 1978 album 'Duck Stab'.
Antony and the Johnsons - Hope There's Someone
I still remember the moment the video for this song came on the telly. I was so blown away by how beautiful the voice I was hearing was, I could've wept! ... but I didn't. Hur. Antony and the Johnsons' music can indeed be a bit tear-jerking at times, however, so don't blame me if you look up more of their stuff and end up reaching for the Kleenex. From their 2005 album 'I Am a Bird Now'.
Madness - Night Boat to Cairo
And now for something more light-hearted: Madness, a (ska-)pop band from Camden Town, London, perform the delightfully bouncy 'Night Boat to Cairo', which featured on their 1979 debut album 'One Step Beyond...'. Just makes you want to dance, doesn't it?
Still more to come!
